On hols this week – But a poem

Paris – 13.11.15

Perhaps everything has been said.

But I need to show solidarity and so,

on the table next to the TV, I’ll place

some bluebells in a jam jar with water

If we can have strawberries all year round,

perhaps bluebells too. Proper English ones.

For the dead, the injured, their loved ones that

after this Autumn and Winter, Spring will come.

Next to these, a lily in a tall thin vase. I’ll not

cut off the stamens so watch your clothes.

In memory of  Kosovo, Iraq and Palestine.

Seeds which rooted are growing hate and death.

Then, in a half pint glass, 3 wild poppies picked

from a harvested field. Be careful they’re fragile.

Religion can make killing machines of us all:

justifying suppressing women, brainwashing men.

The three vases of flowers are there. Lord have mercy.

Remove hearts of stone and transplant hearts of flesh.
